It Was One of the Worst Earthquakes in All World in the Last Two Decades
The first earthquake that started the disaster was the earthquake that struck the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş. It struck at night, at the exact time of 01:17 on 6 February. The magnitude of this earthquake was recorded as 7.7 with an 8.6 depth.
While still shocked by the first one, the second earthquake struck the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş with a 7.6 magnitude and 7.0 depth. The second earthquake shocked all areas at 10:24 on the same day.
The earthquakes occurred in the southeastern part of Turkey. It is known that this part of the country is an earthquake zone, but earthquakes only rarely occur once in centuries.
